Diffusion is the movement of objects from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration.

  • Cells use diffusion in order to move materials into and out of the cell membrane.
  • Diffusion is a type of passive transport which does not require energy.
  • If you take food coloring and drop it in water it will diffuse into the water.
  • If you take an egg and soak it in vinegar, and then place it in water, the water will diffuse into the egg causing it to get larger.
  • Sugar stirred into coffee will diffuse into the coffee.
  • Watering plants diffuses the water into the plants
  • When you go into a coffee shop, and smell the coffee smell, the smell of the coffee has diffused throughout the coffee shop.
  • If you soak a gummy bear in water, the water will diffuse into the gummy bear. and it will get larger.

Osmosis is the diffusion of water across a semi-permeable membrane. The water moves down a concentration gradient and is small enough to pass through the membrane which allows the water to move into and out of the cell..

Diffusion-Real Life Examples

Diffusion Examples

Absorbing water with a paper towel. The water is absorbed by the the movement of water due to osmosis.

Animal cells  Water flows into and out of cells due to the concentration of water inside or outside of the cell. For example, adding salt to water can change the concentration of water.

Plants wilting. The movement of water due to osmosis can cause a plant to wilt or perk up.

Plant Roots  Plants move water up the roots and then to other parts of the plant by using osmosis.
